LZ4 vs Zstandard: frame compatibility and settings
Both are lossless, but LZ4 frames and Zstandard frames are not byte-compatible.
Which format should you choose?
Check receiver support first, then compare size, compression time and decoding time on real data.
Good fit for LZ4
Compress files or streams as LZ4 frames
- Deliver data to an LZ4-compatible reader
Good fit for Zstandard
Losslessly compressing files and streams · Compressing software packages and data transfers
- Tuning compression speed and ratio when both endpoints support zstd
- Streaming or dictionary-based compression workflows
Basic information
| Field | LZ4 | Zstandard |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .lz4 | .zst |
| MIME type | application/zstd | |
| Common uses | Compress files or streams as LZ4 frames | Losslessly compressing files and streams · Compressing software packages and data transfers |
| How to open | Open with a frame-compatible tool and test integrity. Raw blocks need external information such as sizes; renaming does not wrap them in a frame. | Use a zstd-capable decompression tool or library. Before processing an unfamiliar compressed file, check its source, expanded size, and available memory. |
| Export or convert | Decompress before recompressing with Zstandard or another format and compare hashes of decoded data. Package multiple files with TAR first. Retain any external dictionary used. | To convert to gzip or xz, decompress and recompress. Compare file contents or checksums afterward, and consider size, time, settings, and receiver compatibility. A tar.zst combines a tar archive with zstd compression; .zst alone is not an archive. |

ZstandardKey point 1
Distinguish LZ4 raw blocks from frames.
More on the differencesKey point 2
RFC 8878 defines Zstandard frames and dictionaries.
More on the differencesMore on the differences
Evaluate LZ4 for fast processing, but measure Zstandard settings under the same conditions. Names alone do not determine the winner.
- Check LZ4 independent/dependent blocks and checksum settings. The frame specification alone supplies no random-access index.
- If dictionaries are used, provide the reader with the same dictionary for the corresponding format. Multiple files need separate packaging such as TAR.
Frequently asked questions
Can renaming convert one into the other?
No. Decode and recompress, then compare hashes of restored bytes. LZ4 and Zstandard dictionaries are not necessarily interchangeable.
