Compare

MPD vs M3U8

MPD is DASH's XML manifest. M3U8 is a UTF-8 playlist; this comparison covers its HLS use. Neither is the media payload.

Which format should you choose?

Choose MPD for DASH-capable destinations or HLS M3U8 for HLS-capable ones; validate codecs, encryption and players together.

Good fit for MPEG-DASH MPD

Describing media segments and their locations for MPEG-DASH delivery · Listing video quality and alternate audio or subtitle choices

  • Providing presentation and segment references to DASH players
  • Describing time- and quality-based media for live or on-demand delivery

Good fit for HLS playlist

Delivering live and on-demand video with HLS · Pointing players to variant streams and alternate audio or subtitles

  • Providing segment and playlist references to an HLS-capable player
  • Offering multiple video qualities for adaptive playback

How to openInspect the XML in a text editor. To play the presentation, provide the MPD URL to an MPEG-DASH-capable player and make sure its referenced segments are reachable.Open the playlist URL in an HLS-capable browser or media player. You can inspect a local copy in a text editor, but relative URIs need the URL context to resolve correctly. Check tags such as `#EXT-X-STREAM-INF` to understand referenced streams.
Export or convertUse a compatible encoder or packager to segment the media and generate an MPD for the chosen DASH profile. Renaming an XML file to `.mpd` does not create a DASH presentation. Test the manifest and segments on the target playback environment.Use HLS packaging software to segment the media and generate master or media playlists. Renaming a file to `.m3u8` does not convert it to HLS. Test the URIs, segments, and player compatibility in the delivery environment. RFC 8216 permits both `.m3u8` and `.m3u` identifiers; `.m3u8` is the common extension.

Test playback, quality switching and live updates on actual devices, not extensions alone. Neither inherently guarantees higher quality.

  • Segment references, relative URLs, timing and live updates follow each delivery system's rules. Moving the manifest alone may not produce a working service.
  • Some configurations share media segments between DASH and HLS, but codec, initialization and encryption compatibility must be checked.

Frequently asked questions

Does renaming MPD to M3U8 create HLS?

No. Rewrite playlists and arrange suitable packaging and references. Re-encoding depends on existing media and delivery requirements.
