Format Atlas

Guides

Choose a video distribution format

Choose the container and the codecs inside it according to the playback destination and production workflow.

Which format should you choose?

Choose by the role each file plays in your workflow.

  • General delivery → consider MP4
  • Known web playback environment → consider WebM
  • Keep multiple subtitle or audio tracks → consider MKV

Do not decide from the extension alone

MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM are containers. Playback support and file size also depend on the video and audio codecs stored inside.

Formats to consider

MP4

Good for: Video intended for broad playback and delivery

Less suitable for: Handoff without checking the codec

WebM

Good for: Video with defined web playback requirements

Less suitable for: Use without checking editing tools or devices

MOV

Good for: Production in QuickTime-oriented workflows

Less suitable for: Delivery without confirming general playback

MKV

Good for: Storing multiple audio or subtitle tracks

Less suitable for: Simple delivery to a broad audience

Before you export

  • After conversion, check re-encoding and retention of subtitles, chapters, and multiple audio tracks.
  • MP4 is a container, not another name for H.264.
