Handing off and testing a web archive

For a WARC handoff, check capture scope, dependent records, indexes and replay tools together. Unlike unpacking ZIP, verify what a page at a selected capture time can reproduce.

Which format should you choose?

Choose by the role each file plays in your workflow.

  • Document scope and capture time
  • Assemble records and indexes
  • Test replay at the destination

Document scope and capture time

Record target URLs, capture times, collection tools and settings, and missed or truncated content. A visible page alone does not establish capture completion; check images, CSS, redirects and dynamic requests.

Assemble records and indexes

Include the WARC files needed to resolve revisit payloads and segmented records. Match supplied indexes to their files and capture times. If rebuilding is needed, include instructions for the recipient.

Test replay at the destination

Select representative URLs and times in a compatible replay tool. Check pages, images, redirects and omissions. Investigate whether live-web fetches hide missing captures, and document unreproduced behavior and required settings.

Formats to consider

WARC

Good for: Exchanging captured resources and collection metadata

Less suitable for: Guaranteeing every original site behavior by itself

Before you export

  • Inspect cookies, authenticated responses, personal data and request bodies. Share only within approved scope; capture does not imply permission to publish.
  • Keep original records, an inventory and checksums. Replay in a controlled environment; successful display or matching hashes does not guarantee completeness or safety.
