Format Atlas

Guides

Choose an audio streaming format

Start with listener devices, apps, and platform. Choose a codec separately from the container that carries it.

Which format should you choose?

Choose by the role each file plays in your workflow.

  • Broad playback support → MP3
  • Supported platform → AAC or Opus
  • Opus in Ogg → check codec and container separately
  • Keep a lossless source for editing and archiving

Distinguish codecs from containers

Opus and AAC are audio codecs. A file also has a storage format, so check the accepted extension, service, and player together.

Listen before and after conversion

Sound and file size depend on source, settings, and device. Encode the same source with each option; check volume, silence, tags, and playback on real devices.

Formats to consider

MP3

Good for: Delivery to a broad audience

Less suitable for: Keeping it as the only editing source

AAC

Good for: Streaming on supported devices and platforms

Less suitable for: Distribution without checking container and playback support

Opus

Good for: Streaming where Opus is supported

Less suitable for: Generic delivery without support checks

OGG

Good for: Audio storage where Ogg is supported

Less suitable for: Assuming compatibility without identifying the codec

FLAC

Good for: Lossless audio preservation

Less suitable for: General delivery with tight size limits

Before you export

  • Bit rate alone does not determine perceived quality.
  • Confirm which container and codec the platform accepts.
