Format Atlas

Guides

Choose a transparent image format

For transparency, consider whether you need partial opacity, photographic detail, or scalable vector artwork, then check destination support.

Which format should you choose?

Choose by the role each file plays in your workflow.

  • General transparent illustrations → PNG
  • Transparency with web size in mind → WebP
  • Scalable logos and shapes → SVG

Distinguish partial transparency from vector artwork

Removing a background is only one need. Separate semi-transparent edges, photographic assets, and scalable vector shapes before choosing a format.

Formats to consider

PNG

Good for: Illustrations and UI assets that retain transparency

Less suitable for: Lightweight delivery of photographs

WebP

Good for: Transparent images for web delivery

Less suitable for: Use where destination support cannot be checked

SVG

Good for: Logos, icons, and geometric artwork

Less suitable for: Raster photographs

GIF

Good for: Simple animation where compatibility matters

Less suitable for: Smooth semi-transparent effects

Before you export

  • Converting PNG to JPEG does not preserve transparency.
  • Check how the destination handles backgrounds and alpha transparency.
