Image transparency

Transparency lets the background show through parts of an image. Check whether the format and destination preserve an alpha channel; JPEG does not provide ordinary transparency.

Formats

PNGPNG is a lossless raster image format that supports alpha transparency.WebPWebP is an image format designed for web delivery. It can use lossy or lossless compression and supports alpha transparency and animation.AVIFAVIF is a still-image format based on the AV1 Image File Format specification. It is an option for balancing image size and quality in web delivery, rather than an automatic replacement for JPEG or WebP.SVGSVG is an XML-based vector image format. It can preserve sharp outlines when scaled, making it useful for logos, icons, and diagrams rather than photographic images.GIFGIF is an image format that can contain multiple frames and is commonly used for short looping animation. Because its color palette is limited, it fits simple diagrams and short explanations better than photographs or long motion.

Compare

JPEG vs PNGJPEG commonly uses lossy compression and suits many photographs, while PNG preserves pixel values losslessly and supports transparency. The choice depends on image content, editing needs, and the destination's requirements.PNG vs WebPBoth PNG and WebP can support transparency. PNG is a widely supported lossless format; WebP is an option for optimizing web delivery and can also support animation. Compare real assets and target browsers.

Raster vs vector imagesRaster images store pixels; vector images describe shapes. Photographs usually suit raster formats, while logos and diagrams often benefit from vectors that scale cleanly.
